A particular focus is placed on practical situations from everyday hospital life. These include:

    • Doctor-patient consultation: Taking a medical history (anamnesis) and communicating with patients.
    • Short medical report: Written documentation of medical information.
    • Doctor-doctor discussion: Presenting and discussing a medical case with a fellow doctor.

The examination consists of a written and an oral component and is currently offered in a paper-based format.

  • What is the difference between telc German B2-C1 Medicine and telc German B2-C1 Medical Language Examination (FSP)?

Both examinations are designed for doctors but differ in their structure and the types of language skills assessed.

telc German B2-C1 Medicine is a profession-specific language examination for doctors. It assesses language skills used in everyday medical practice in the areas of reading, listening, writing and speaking at B2 and C1 levels.

The telc German B2-C1 Medical Language Examination (FSP) focuses specifically on professional medical communication. Particular emphasis is placed on typical situations in everyday medical practice, including doctor-patient consultations with medical history taking (anamnesis), writing a short medical report and doctor-doctor discussions.

The telc German B2-C1 Medical Language Examination (FSP) certificate demonstrates profession-specific language skills at the upper B2 level, as well as medical and professional language competencies at C1 level.

Which examination you need depends primarily on the language proficiency requirements of the responsible recognition authority or medical association (Ärztekammer). We therefore recommend checking the requirements applicable to your individual recognition or medical licensing procedure before registering.

  • Does the telc B2-C1 Medical Language Examination replace the Fachsprachprüfung conducted by the German Medical Association (Ärztekammer)?

Not automatically. Whether the telc German B2·C1 Medical Language Examination is recognised as proof of medical language proficiency for the Approbation process depends on the respective German federal state and the responsible recognition authority.

The requirements for demonstrating medical language proficiency may vary by region. In some cases, suitable medical language examinations offered by other providers may also be accepted alongside the Fachsprachprüfung conducted by a medical association (Ärztekammer).

We therefore recommend that you check directly with the authority responsible for your Approbation procedure before registering for the exam to confirm whether the telc German B2·C1 Medical Language Examination is accepted as proof of medical language proficiency in your specific case.

  • How is the telc German B2-C1 Medical Language Examination structured?

The telc German B2·C1 Medical Language Examination consists of a written examination and an individual oral examination.

The written examination assesses the following areas:

    • Listening: 3 parts, approx. 30 minutes
    • Reading and Language Elements: 5 parts in total, approx. 50 minutes

There is no scheduled break between these examination sections.

The subsequent oral examination is based on typical situations in everyday medical practice and consists of three parts:

    • Doctor-patient consultation: You conduct a medical history interview (anamnesis) with a patient.
    • Short medical report: Based on the medical history obtained, you write a short medical report.
    • Doctor-doctor discussion: You then present the medical case to a fellow doctor and discuss it using appropriate medical terminology.

Approximately 65 minutes are allocated for this examination component. It is conducted as an individual examination, with an additional 5 minutes of preparation time.

The telc German B2·C1 Medical Language Examination is currently offered in a paper-based format and cannot be taken as a partial examination.
